Cold Spell

When the Gulf Stream stopped
And the endless snows came
We packed our memories in fleece and fur
And headed south.

The rumours say
You can walk across the English Channel
On the ice

We trudged
Down frosty lanes
Littered with plastic cards
And defunct fridges

Heading for Paradise,
Our English cousins'
Secret fortress
In Southern Spain

Ahhh...southern Spain...must be lovely and worth the trek. Only you expressed it much more nicely.

Not sure about the poem, actually. That's the trouble with poems straight from my notebook. It needs a bit more work.
There was a programme on TV recently that said one effect of global warming and the melting of the Polar ice-cap would be - NOT the British Isles getting hotter but the very opposite.
The cold water entering the North Sea will interfere with the Gulf Stream, an ocean system which brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico to our shores and which is responsible for our mild climate. With no Gulf Stream the weather in Britain will get colder and our climate will be more like that of Northern Canada and Alaska- which are on the same latitude as us.
In other wowrds the UK will ice over. And this could happen, the programme said, in the next ten years.

Archie is rubbing his hands together at the thought of all that snow!
Mind you, Norway has really beautiful hot summers which last about two months and then it snows for the rest of the year. This would suit hazel down to the ground. we could all go skiing!

Give me a fire, roaring orange & gold, to draw near. Ice is stark and blinding white...and lonely, I fear.

Hey Syl, that sounded like a poem to me.
