Christmas Comes Apace
Jill’s parents have now left and my mum (80) is now visiting. Sorted out a great part of her Christmas present list yesterday by visiting a bookshop in Hastings. Books for all her grandchildren. A job well done. And found Don Paterson's Book of Shadows – which I’ve heard so much about . Several people listed it as a favourite book of 2004 in the Guardian round-up. I’m reading it right now – very interesting – but have a member of the family in mind who will be getting it as a present. Aphorisms used to be very popular didn’t they? It would be a good blog subject I think.
Last night I put up the string for the cards. The Leigh’s card is in pride of place. (See Flobberlob) Also got the tree out of its box and this morning put the lights on. Our first present is ready to go beneath it. It’s also from the Leighs and is a CD or possibly two. Can’t wait to hear what’s on them. I’ve got a nice pile of tracks accumulating ready for our CD to them. A bit of a tradition this.
Other news. The Molecules project is progressing well. James is coming over next Friday to add the lead guitar. Meanwhile I’ve started adding some applause. Also we now have the Matt Harvey collection available from - Rabbit Press. Four pocket-sized booklets of his poetry. I’m really pleased to be selling it. I saw him in performance a few months back and thought he was brilliant. Really funny. And the great thing is – his poems also work really well on the page. A nice guy, too.
Okay – enough blatant advertising – even if it is Christmas! Time to dress the tree and put up the decorations. Not to mention recording my Mum’s contribution to The Family Album. But more of that anon.

will you do the christmas tree alone? i fix our tree (at my dad's place) alone. my brother and dad think it's my sole responsibility. anyway i like doing it alone as they lack artistic sense (said me).
Well, Amie, we've had several types of tree over the years. Once upon a time we'd buy a real tree with roots, then plant it in the garden. But the last few years we've gone for an artificial one. It's quite big and comes apart and stores easily. The needles are a papery substance and it looks quite realistic.
As usual I assembled it and strung the lights around it and Jilly hung the decorations. And put the fairy on top. The poor fairy is very old and goes back to Jill's childhood I think. She no longer has her arms. (The fairy, that is, not Jill.) One year I shall find her a new pair.
What sort of tree do you have in your neck of the woods?
We havent bought our tree yet. Hazel insists on a real one as she says they smell nicer! I reckon an artificcial one and a quick spray of Pine Lavatory Cleaner would work just as well! I did put the lights up in the windows at the front of the house which have been set to alternate flashing and twinkling ( or is it twankling and flishling?). Hazel, in an effort to keep up with the neighbours went out and bought a santa and tree that light up. The santa appears to be jumping over the tree.
I expect we will put the rest of the decorations, bunting,paperchains etc. up at the weekend.
Who are these Leigh's you keep mentioning? They sound like very nice and generous folk!
The Leighs are indeed very nice people. As are the Jones's. And the Leigh-Jones's too. Not to mention the Jones-Leighs.
I think that we're out to get a tree tomorrow night... a real one, with needles that drop off and aren't completely hoovered up until July. No way that we can keep up with the neighbors outdoor decorating here. I'll post pics of that in a day or two. They actually have bus tours to see the lights in Somerville... over the top Italian, Portugese, Brazilian sorts. I'm surprised that it doesn't misdirect the aircraft...
I'm afraid Christmas for me starts in June, and by the time the music begins I'm tired of it all. By the way, I have perfect Christmas trees growing in pots, great for a balcony or patio after the Holiday Season, only $9.99 or $24.99 each, depending on size. Delivery not included.

we don't have the real tree here...well atleast i've never been to a house with a real one anyway. as far as i know pine tree only grows here in Baguio City, that's up north of the Phils (a few hours travel time) so it isn't just practical to get one.
